Portia - High School Teacher in Chicago, Battling Multiple Sclerosis
Dream Adventure - Pursue a Doctorate Degree in Education, Aurora University, August 2012
After experiencing temporary blindness on the Kennedy Expressway in 1998, Portia was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. A year later and unable to work, she shifted her focus to writing and fulfilling a bucket list. Despite continuous fatigue, pain, and periodic vision challenges, Portia ran the Chicago Marathon, skydived, and earned a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education. She gains inspiration from Lance Armstrong, Ernest Henley, and her dog, Gunner. At the age of nine, Portia promised her mom, she would one day earn a doctorate degree. Unfortunately, Portia does not qualify for a federal grant and the financial aid and notification of scholarship awards are slow in processing. Dream Adventures is asking you to donate any amount to Portia’s tuition. So she can continue to encourage youth to stay in school and to overcome all obstacles.
